Dear Friends,

Meet People Where They Are

I just finished a 5 week University teaching assignment a couple of days ago. It was my first; and Boy was It Grueling. The curriculum was challengingmy Adult student were even more challenging. Let me explain.

Students were given weekly team assignments as well as individual writing tasks. Because it was a university-level class, academic rigor was the order of the day. Alas, now comes the rub.

I did not connectat first. Heck, I didnt connect until the last week of class. Why? Because I did not Meet People Where They Are. I wanted, expected; wait, I Demanded Excellence. Why did My Adult Undergraduates fail to embrace the studies with the same passion and vigor as did I? Whats wrong with these peopledont they get it?

I was a Team of One versus 11 of them. What Happened? I failed to Meet People Where They Are. Best Selling Author and Leadership expert, John C. Maxwell, explained it best with his latest book, EVERYONE COMMUNICATES, FEW CONNECT. Maxwell submits that the most effective people (aka Leaders) do things differently when it comes to communicating with others.

He goes on to write that the best communicators, business people, and politicians are able to strike a common chord with their audiences. Moreover, these individuals connect with their listenersin much the same way as does Social Media Giant, Facebook. Why didnt I see that? Because I failed to Meet People Where They Are.

How can you and I do a better job of communicating with our families, friends, co-workers, and most of all---with those in which we lead? Real simplehere it is within its most basic form. Meet People Where They Are. How do I know this? I asked my studentsthey told me, rather direct and bluntly Meet People Where They Are.
